The curved shapes of 11 bells harmonize visually with the three workers carefully repairing the chimes of the Garrison Church near the former Imperial Palace in Potsdam. The church dated back to 1722 and the bell tower rose more than 285 feet high.
The church stood until mid-April 1945 when a British air raid destroyed most of Potsdam's inner city during World War II. Though the church wasn't hit by the bombing, it caught fire when a nearby building, used as an ammunitions depot, exploded. The bell tower played music for about 30 minutes during the blaze before the structure fell with all its bells ringing for the last time.
